How To Exercise Vocal Dynamics.

How to Exercise Vocal Dynamics -- powered by ehow

I have carried out some research and found this tutorial which I hope will help me to improve my use of dynamics when performing. I will look at this video when I am warming up and hope to see the effects of it in my performance.

I feel that to improve my use of dynamics I also need to work on how wide I open my mouth when I am singing, as although I may sing quietly/softer, I need to be sure to open my mouth just as wide as I would if I were singing louder/raising the piece. By opening my mouth properly to sing, the sound will carry further and improve the overall sound of my piece.

Planning A Recital.

During the lesson we had on 29th September we discussed how to plan a recital. It was explained to us that we need to capture our audience's attention from the very first moment and in order to do this we need to open with an upbeat song. My recital will probably include 5 songs in order for it to last about 15 minutes. I will open with an upbeat song, bring the mood down gradually with a slower song, save my 'soft' song for the middle and then gradually build back up again, finishing with another 'crowd pleaser'. I think that if I do this then I will have my audience's full attention throughout my performance.

I need to look at my exisiting material and also find some new songs which I think I will be able to perform well. I will look over my repertoire and decide on an appropriate order for my recital.

Benchmark Performance.

Holly S Benchmark from Gavin Hood on Vimeo.

The video I have posted shows my benchmark performance. This is the first recording and my aim is to improve it significantly for the next time I perform it.

Self Evaluation.
In order to do this I need to relax into the song a lot more, as I know that I can sing it better than I have done on this recording. I need to work on adding more dynamics throughout the song in order to make it more interesting to listen to. I also need to work on the parts where I feel my voice sounds weaker, to do this I will come up with some exercises which I will explain after some research.

Teacher Evaluation.
I have listened to the feedback given to me from Miss Dawes and have taken on board what she has said. I agree that I need to step away from the mic stand when performing in order to make my performance better, I think this will make my audience feel more relaxed and therefore will make me feel a lot more comfortable aswell. I also need to include more dynamics in this song, which I will work on by practising certain areas of the song, as there is no point in going over the bits that I am comfortable with.
